Scoring and leaderboard rules

How points are scored and what goes on the leaderboard, exactly as the code and the leaderboard server do it.

Same five for everyone

On a given date everyone gets the same five paintings in the same order. The date changes at midnight Korea time.

The four country options are also fixed by the date and the painting.

The answer is the museum's record

The answer is the start year (objectBeginDate) and end year (objectEndDate) in The Metropolitan Museum of Art's record. A single year means that year. A range means the whole range.

For the country we use the record's culture value first, then country, then artist nationality. The answer screen tells you which one it was and shows the original value.

If the value names more than one place or is marked uncertain, we skip the country question and only ask for the year.

Points

Each painting is worth 1,000. With a country question that's 800 for the year and 200 for the country. Without one, the year is worth all 1,000.

A year inside the recorded range gets full year points. Outside it, points shrink with the years to the nearest end: about 82% left at 10 years, 37% at 50, 14% at 100.

The right country is 200, a wrong one 0. Five paintings make 5,000 max.

What goes on the leaderboard

When you start today's game, the leaderboard server (ranks.gwirae.com) hands out a ticket. After all five, your browser sends that ticket and today's score.

Only your first game of the day counts. Locked-in answers can't be changed, and a game you've already finished in this browser isn't sent again.

Scores above 5,000, games finished in under 10 seconds, and games from another day are rejected. Past games are never sent.

Helpers

Narrow the century is a subscription helper slot. It isn't on sale yet.

Using the helper halves that painting's year points, so money can't buy a higher score.

Games played with a helper stay on the same board with a helper tag. Nothing is hidden or split off.

What this can't stop

To show you the answers, the records for the day's five paintings are inside this page. Someone digging through the page source could find them, and this setup can't catch that.

Clearing your browser data makes you a new player. Signed in with a Gwirae account, only the account's first game counts.
